Wingspan FAQ

  • Wingspan is an award-winning engine-building card game designed by Elizabeth Hargrave, published by Stonemaier Games. Players compete to attract birds to their wildlife preserves, using beautifully illustrated bird cards with unique powers to build powerful combinations. It suits 1–5 players, plays in 40–70 minutes, and is suitable for ages 10+.

  • The Wingspan 2nd Edition is the current version and the best starting point for new players. It includes updated components and is fully compatible with all expansions. If you already own the original edition, the expansions work with both versions.

  • Yes — the European, Oceania, and Asia expansions all require the Wingspan base game to play, with one exception: Wingspan Asia can also be played as a standalone 2-player game without the base game.

  • The European Expansion adds new bird cards and a new end-of-round goal board. The Oceania Expansion introduces a new food type (nectar) and Oceanian birds with unique mechanics. The Asia Expansion adds birds from Asia and a new 2-player mode. Finspan is a standalone spin-off featuring fish rather than birds, using the same core system.

  • Finspan is a standalone game in the Wingspan universe featuring fish and aquatic creatures instead of birds. It uses the same core engine-building mechanics as Wingspan but is a completely separate game — no base game required. It is fully compatible with Wingspan for combined play.

  • Wingspan has a moderate rules complexity — the first game takes around 45–60 minutes including setup and learning. After one play, the engine-building strategy becomes intuitive. It is suitable for families comfortable with hobby games and experienced hobby gamers alike.
